Refurbishment and extension improves capacity of Olympic-standard gym.
K2 Crawley Leisure Centre is operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Crawley Borough Council. As one of just three centres in the UK offering Olympic-standard training facilities, the popularity of its classes and gym meant there was a need for more space and a larger variety of equipment to meet demand.
The project involved the removal of load bearing structural walls to enlarge two existing spaces. We transformed an intricate, existing first floor bar and communal area into a multi-use gym space. This involved the supply and installation of new air handling equipment and a replacement of the barrel vault roof light, which stretched across the reception into the new gym area.
Our team undertook much of the project during normal office hours, but there was an element of out of hours working needed to avoid disturbing the day-to-day running of the gym.
Thanks to our work, the leisure centre has been able to increase its gym capacity and the total number of weekly group exercise places available each week.
